Mayor Hunting on the Lake

Four Zulia mayors have been arrested after Diosdado announced that 5.4 tons of cocaine were seized in the state. Three officials are chavistas, and one belongs to Acción Democrática.

A widening crackdown in Zulia

On March 14, Cabello announced that a police operation in Zulia led to the capture of two chavista officials and an Ecuadorian drug trafficker. The Interior Minister announced the arrests of mayors Jorge Nava (Miranda municipality) and Alberto Sobalvarro (Almirante Padilla municipality) in a police operation targeting the participation of local authorities in drug trafficking and paramilitary networks.

“There is no leniency of any kind for those who attempt to use the flag of the revolution for this type of criminal actions,” Cabello warned.

On March 15, it was revealed that the mayors of Catatumbo and Lossada—Fernando Loaiza (Acción Democrática) and Danilo Áñez (PSUV)—were also detained.

This brings the total number of jailed mayors in Zulia to 7 since last year. Earlier arrests targeted opposition figures Rafael Ramírez Colina (Primero Justicia), the former mayor of Maracaibo; Nabil Maalouf (Un Nuevo Tiempo) of Cabimas; and Nervins Sarcos (Un Nuevo Tiempo), of Colón.
