Blocking the roads – a favorite tactic in the fight to preserve the Wayu’u people’s ancestral right to…smuggle gas.

Maracaibo’s oppo daily, La Verdad, has the scoop on the fast rising tensions between the military and the Bachaqueros – the indigenous fuel-smuggling gangs of Zulia State.

So what we have here is large sections of Venezuela’s largest indigenous group building their collective identity on the basis of…their right to smuggle subsidized fuel to Colombia.

It’s easy to see the Gasoline Subsidy in abstract, disembodied terms. It’s good to be reminded that well away from the abstractions of the economist’s toolkit, the policy is ripping apart real communities day in and day out.
