Look what you’ve done

The Caracas Chronicles Procurement Committee

A few days ago, we held our first Caracas Chronicles fundraiser for Petare’s Escuela Oropeza. Thanks to your generous help, we raised our goal in just a few hours.

Last weekend, three readers (Federico Ortega, Roberto Mateu, and Rodrigo Linares, thank you!) went to Epa! hardware store with Assistant Principal Cristina Castro and Shop Teacher Luis Sulvarán. They bought BsF. 17 thousand worth of materials for the students of Escuela Oropeza.

As soon as the kids have their supplies we will post more pics. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Let’s hope this much-needed, albeit tiny, grain of sand can make a difference in these kids’ lives.

I’m very glad to see this. I’m sure some reader will have contacts in EPA or similar store we could use to try to get discounts for future fund-raisers. Let’s try to get more bang for our buck!

“two readers (Federico Ortega, Roberto Mateu, and Rodrigo Linares, thank you!) ”
Two readers? One, two…and two? That’s why I say: education, education! :-p

    Seriously: thanks a lot!
We can keep on eye on how things are used and if everything goes well we can see if a tiny library can be set up?
Two detailed maps of Venezuela are on their way to Caracas…so that next time you go there every pupil will be able to tell you where Maracaibo is.

I’d love to see these items in use, with kids being busy while smiling. Well done, all contributing readers, plus actual purchasers. Thank you!

Off-topic Did Chavez meet with the Pope or not?

Information is kept secret in Cuba even if the Pope is involved.

This article shows how dictators end up with inept Air Forces and Navies

While the article concentrates on Arab countries, much of the same can be said for Venezuela. Corruption has limited the abilities of the Venezuelan military. While the pre-Chavez military did not have Russian fighter jets, submarines, tanks, and other fancy equipment, the soldiers were disciplined and the military was respected. Now Venezuela could hardly fight a war against Haiti. When Chavez ordered 3 divisions to the Columbia border, traffic problems in Caracas stopped them completely. Russians are maintaining the fighter jets and I suspect flying the planes in exhibitions. It is a military for show only. However, it may be able to kill and maim Venezuelan civilians when called on. Read the article and compare for yourself.
